A Community of Faith, Worship, and Unwavering Hope

Strengthen Your Faith, Connect with Community

In the early 1850s a group of dedicated Christians met and decided to form a Methodist
congregation in Edinburg, Virginia. They secured the services of a minister from the Woodstock
Charge and met in a little brick Union church which stood on the brow of what became known as
Marston Hill at the North End of town. When the building was taken down, they met in the old
potter’s shop on Center Street until beginning to meet in the new United Brethren Church which
was nearby.

Dedicated in 1869, the church was a two-story brick building with Sunday school and other
meeting rooms on the 1st floor and a sanctuary on the upper floor. The building was heated by
two large stoves and lit by oil lamps. The sexton would use a long step ladder to light and
extinguish the lamps before and after the services. The “Amen Corner” was on one side of the
sanctuary and the choir sat on the other side, accompanied by a small pump organ. The belfry
held a large bell, still in use today, which called people to service.

The congregation was part of the Woodstock circuit until 1889, when Edinburg became the head
of a multi-church circuit which included our sister church, Wesley Chapel.
As the congregation grew, so did the need for a larger sanctuary and more Sunday school space.
The original building was taken down and the present-day church was built on the same site,
being dedicated on May 7, 1917.

presiding elder overseeing the Valley South District. The Edinburg Methodist Parish became
Global Methodists on December 1, 2023. We are excited about what God is doing in the GMC
